Plot summary
As World War II ends and Soviet forces close on Berlin, General Helmut Kladen carries secret documents meant to buy Germany terms with the Allies. The U.S. Army intercepts him. Decades later in Los Angeles, Lieutenant Barney Caine is assigned the murder of Tom Neeley, his friend and former boss, a death that looks like a drug deal gone wrong. Caine finds the word Gene in Neeley's blood and a map carrying the name Obermann. Neeley had ties to Adam Steiffel, an oil tycoon who used him as a bagman in international deals. When Caine learns that Steiffel's company sent Neeley overseas, he persuades his superior to let him go to Germany, where the trail points to Genesis, a synthetic fuel formula the Nazis developed.
