Plot summary
Astronomers believed they had found what was left of Krypton, and Superman flew off to look. He found nothing and stayed away five years. Back on Earth he returns to work as Clark Kent, a reporter at the Daily Planet in Metropolis, and learns that Lois Lane, whom he loves, is engaged to Richard White, the nephew of editor Perry White, and has a five-year-old son, Jason. Lex Luthor, newly released from prison, married a wealthy widow and expected to inherit her money. He goes to the Fortress of Solitude, steals Kryptonian crystals, and his experiment with them cuts the power on the East Coast. The blackout strikes during a space shuttle test flight carried on an airliner with Lois aboard; Clark acts as Superman, sending the shuttle up and keeping the plane in the air.

- Marlon Brando, who died in 2004, reprises Jor-El from the 1978 film through footage filmed by Richard Donner for Superman II before his dismissal and rescued for Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, which required negotiations with Brando's estate.
- One of the key scenes Singer took out was "the Return to Krypton sequence": ten million dollars was spent on it alone, and it could not even be released as part of a DVD featurette because it had been converted to IMAX 3D.
- Hugh Laurie was originally cast as Perry White, but he was unable to film due to commitments to the TV show House, so the part went to Frank Langella.
- Jim Caviezel expressed interest in playing Superman, but Singer believed only an unknown actor would be suitable, and Brandon Routh was chosen from thousands of candidates interviewed at casting calls in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.
- Kevin Spacey was the only actor considered for Lex Luthor, because of his Academy Award-winning performance in Singer's film The Usual Suspects (1995) and his friendship with Singer; the writers specifically had Spacey in mind when writing the part.
