Plot summary
The British government wants the Caribbean island of Queimada opened to the Antilles Royal Sugar Company. In 1844 the Admiralty sends Sir William Walker, an agent provocateur, to the Portuguese colony. His job is to set the enslaved Africans against the Portuguese regime, so that white planters who can be relied on take its place. Walker singles out José Dolores, a porter, and draws him into heading the uprising.

- Troubled working conditions pushed Burn! over schedule and over budget, and United Artists nearly fired director Gillo Pontecorvo; Marlon Brando insisted the film be finished and paid for the production to be moved from Cartagena, Colombia, to Morocco, where it could be completed for less money.
- Producer Alberto Grimaldi suggested Sidney Poitier for the rebel leader José Dolores, but director Gillo Pontecorvo insisted on Evaristo Márquez instead: an illiterate Colombian herdsman with no acting experience whom Pontecorvo met while scouting locations.
- Marlon Brando turned down a part in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and a reunion with director Elia Kazan on The Arrangement to make Burn!, and also had to pass on a major role in Ryan's Daughter because of this film's production problems.
