Plot summary
Naqoyqatsi is a non-narrative film. Its three movements carry its argument. The first concerns language and place replaced by numerical code and virtual reality; the second treats competition, winning, records, fame and money as the highest values; the third and final movement looks at a world beyond what language can describe. Most of its images come from archive footage and stock material, processed digitally and intercut with computer-generated imagery to show a society trading a natural environment for a technology-based one, a process described as virtual cinema. The title is a Hopi word meaning life of war, also translated as civilized violence.
