Plot summary
A sniper's bullet damages the spinal cord of U.S. Army lieutenant Ken Wilocek during World War II, and he returns home paralyzed. In the years that follow he struggles to accept his condition, and he lives in the paraplegic ward of a veterans hospital, embittered and withdrawn into hatred and hostility. Ellen is his fiancée, and he refuses to see her. Dr. Brock, the head physician of the ward, cajoles Ken into the life of the ward. Norm, Leo and Angel, other patients there, begin to draw him out. Dr. Brock came to paraplegia after a car accident injured his wife many years earlier.

- Many real patients and staff at the Birmingham Veterans Administration Hospital in Van Nuys, California, where much of the film was shot, appear in it, among them paraplegic Arthur Jurado, Dr. Norman Karr, physical therapist Helen Winston and nurses Rhoda Cormeny and Eunice Newberry.
