Plot summary
Emiliano Zapata, a Mestizo from the southern state of Morelos, has no money and is part of a delegation that goes to Mexico City in 1909 to complain that the village arable land has been enclosed, leaving the peasants only the barren hills. President Porfirio Díaz dismisses their concerns, and Zapata's dissatisfaction puts him in danger. He frees a prisoner from the local militia and becomes an outlaw. A strolling intellectual, Fernando Aguirre, urges him to support the exiled Francisco Madero against Díaz, and Zapata becomes the leader of Madero's forces in the South, while Francisco 'Pancho' Villa leads in the North. Zapata's brother Eufemio joins the rebellion, and Zapata wants the seized land returned to the campesinos who work it.
