Marlene Dietrich
Biography
Marlene Dietrich was a singer and actress who was born in Berlin and later became an American citizen. She started out there on the stage and in silent films, and her portrayal of the cabaret singer Lola Lola in The Blue Angel (1930), directed by Josef von Sternberg, brought her international fame and a Paramount contract. Six of her Hollywood films were directed by von Sternberg, among them Morocco (1930), which earned her only Academy Award nomination, Dishonored (1931), Shanghai Express (1932), Blonde Venus (1932), The Scarlet Empress (1934) and The Devil Is a Woman (1935). Her career was revived by the western comedy Destry Rides Again (1939), and later films included A Foreign Affair (1948), Alfred Hitchcock's Stage Fright (1950), Witness for the Prosecution (1957), Touch of Evil (1958) and Judgment at Nuremberg (1961). From the early 1950s to the mid-1970s she worked mainly as a cabaret performer and received a Special Tony Award in 1968.

Big break
In 1929 Dietrich got her breakthrough part as Lola Lola in the UFA production of The Blue Angel, a cabaret singer whose downfall of a respectable schoolmaster was played by Emil Jannings.
A first
Dietrich was the only performer told that her recordings were for OSS use. She recorded several songs in German for the project, among them "Lili Marleen", which soldiers on both sides of the conflict liked.
Behind the award
In November 1947, Dietrich was awarded the Medal of Freedom for what was called her extraordinary record of entertaining troops overseas during the war. She described this as her proudest accomplishment.
