Mel Ferrer
Biography
Mel Ferrer was an American actor, director, and producer who worked in film, theater, and television. Born in Elberon, New Jersey, he acted in summer stock as a teenager, danced in Broadway choruses, and later returned to Broadway to star in Strange Fruit and direct Cyrano de Bergerac. After directing at Columbia Pictures, he made his screen acting debut in Lost Boundaries (1949) and then appeared in Scaramouche (1952), Lili (1953), and Knights of the Round Table (1953). He starred in War and Peace (1956) and produced Wait Until Dark (1967). From the 1970s he acted extensively in Italian films, including The Antichrist (1974) and Nightmare City (1980), and appeared in Lili Marleen (1981). He also appeared on Falcon Crest from 1981 to 1984, and he had a Hollywood Walk of Fame star.

Ferrer made his screen acting debut starring in Lost Boundaries (1949) as a black man passing for white, a controversial and much acclaimed role.
A role that slipped away
Ferrer replaced Fernando Lamas as the villain in MGM's Scaramouche (1952), a huge hit noted for his long climactic sword fight with Stewart Granger.

At 21, Ferrer was a chorus dancer on the Broadway stage. Two years later, he made his acting debut there.
Behind the camera
Ferrer founded the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, working alongside Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire and Joseph Cotten to establish the theater.
A first
In 1937, Ferrer received the Theatre Intime award, which recognized the best new play written by a Princeton undergraduate, for his play titled Awhile to Work.
