Ernest Cossart
Biography
Ernest Cossart was an English-American actor who began on the stage in Britain before moving to the United States in 1908, where he worked in Broadway productions and toured around the country. He returned to Broadway in 1919 after appearing in West End musical comedy. In the late 1920s he acted in London in Caprice with Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, and in 1932 he was Colonel Tallboys when Bernard Shaw's Too True to Be Good had its world premiere. On Broadway he was Lord Throgmorton in Mary of Scotland in 1933. From the 1930s he worked in Hollywood films, often typecast as butlers and valets; The New York Times called butlers his specialty. The servants he and Edward Everett Horton played in Angel (1937) were judged the best part of that film. He appeared as Pa Monaghan opposite Ronald Reagan in Kings Row (1942) and played Squire Brown in Tom Brown's School Days. He died in 1951.
