Plot summary
Madeleine de Beaupré selects a string of pearls at a Paris jeweler and introduces herself to the owner, Aristide Duvalle, as the wife of the psychiatrist Maurice Pauquet, who will cover the cost. Duvalle sends the pearls to Pauquet's office. Madeleine gets there first and describes a husband convinced he must collect debts; the doctor is to examine him. She intercepts Duvalle outside, takes the necklace, and leaves both men thinking the other is her husband. Driving toward the Spanish border, she splashes mud on Tom Bradley, an American engineer on vacation, who follows her. At customs she slips the pearls into his jacket pocket, and his luggage clears.
