Plot summary
Sir Frederick Barker is a British diplomat whose work keeps him away from his wife, Maria, though he loves her. During a trip of his to Geneva, she goes in secret to Paris for advice from the Grand Duchess Anna Dmitrievna, an old friend who runs a high-class escort business. A friend has sent Anthony Halton, a man who has lived for years in India, to the same salon. Maria wants their meeting to stay anonymous, but the two are attracted to each other.
