Plot summary
After her father dies, Lily Czepanek leaves the countryside and moves in with her strict aunt in the city. The aunt owns a bookshop and treats Lily more like a servant than family. During the day Lily works in the shop; at night she slips across the street to pose for Richard Waldow, a sculptor. At first she refuses his invitation to pose, but under her aunt's harsh scrutiny she consents. She falls in love with him, though he has little money. Baron von Merzbach, a wealthy patron of Richard's, notices Lily and takes an interest in her, but his intentions are not good.

- Director Rouben Mamoulian and Paramount skipped submitting a final shooting script to the MPPDA and sent a finished print instead to the New York State Censorship Board, whose methods they thought less harsh. Mamoulian personally appealed, and the film escaped wholesale cuts, losing just 1500 feet before its 1933 release.
- Censors at the Hays Office warned Paramount production manager Jesse Lasky that the protagonist's low moral character in the silent version would not be tolerated in a sound remake of The Song of Songs.
- Even after objectionable material had been removed, The Song of Songs was denied a reissue in 1935 and filed away for decades as a film with a social problem.
