Plot summary
Mother Josephine, who heads Le Couvent de Ste. Cecile, tells the lonely Domini Enfilden that she may find herself in the Sahara's solitude. On the train toward Beni Mora she meets a silent man; in a cafe he helps her get away when Irena, a dancer, pulls a knife on Hadj, who refuses to marry her, and he gives his name as Boris Androvsky. At the Oasis of Azur, Count Ferdinand Anteoni urges Domini to hold back from the desert until the urge is strong, and Boris, who shows a violent dislike of religion, casts his crucifix into the water for girls who admire it. A sand diviner promises Domini something glorious on her pilgrimage and gives her a grave warning. Weeks pass and the two fall in love, though Boris keeps his past hidden.
