Emile Chautard
Biography
Émile Chautard was a French-American filmmaker who worked as a director, actor, and screenwriter, chiefly in the silent era, and he was born in Paris. His career started on the stage in Paris, where he acted at the Odéon, and by 1913 he had risen to run production for Éclair Films in that city. In 1915 he moved to the United States and spent about three years with the World Film Company, which was based in Fort Lee, New Jersey. At that studio he helped develop films including the 1915 version of Camille and taught the young Josef von Sternberg, whom he hired in 1919 as assistant director on The Mystery of the Yellow Room. He directed over 100 films from 1910 to 1924, then stopped directing but kept acting, appearing in more than 60 films through 1934. He also acted in von Sternberg's Blonde Venus (1932). He died in 1934.
