Gustav von Seyffertitz
Biography
Gustav von Seyffertitz was a German actor and director who settled in the United States. Born into an aristocratic family that expected him to start a military career, he chose acting instead, joining the Meiningen Court Theatre and appearing in operas. In 1896 he moved to America after theater director Heinrich Conried asked him, and despite his thick German accent he built a career on Broadway as both performer and director in the 1900s and 1910s. His film debut came in 1917 with Douglas Fairbanks in Down to Earth. He portrayed German military men, and he was Professor Moriarty in the 1922 Sherlock Holmes with John Barrymore. In Sparrows (1926) he played Mary Pickford's opponent, and in The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg (1927) he was Ramon Novarro's uncle, a small German state's king. He took supporting roles in Dishonored (1931) and Shanghai Express (1932), and he appeared in 118 films from 1917 to 1939.
