Plot summary
Vienna, 1915. The chief of the Austrian secret service seeks out Marie Kolverer, a war widow and pianist, posing as a foreign agent to test where her loyalty lies. She alerts a constable without a word, and he invites her to central intelligence headquarters. There he explains that a security leak has cost the Austrian forces terrible losses, and that he needs an attractive woman to serve as a secret agent and expose Colonel von Hindau, whom he suspects. Marie accepts and enlists as Agent X-27. She draws Hindau's attention and is invited to his apartment, where she is to play the part of a woman interested in him.

Paramount executives chose the title Dishonored over the objections of director Josef von Sternberg, who said the lady spy "was not dishonored, but killed by firing squad" and felt the title distorted the significance of her death.- Josef von Sternberg based the story loosely on the exploits and demise of the Dutch spy Mata Hari, the real person behind the film.
