Steve Pemberton
Biography
Steve Pemberton is a British actor, comedian, writer and director known for his work on the BBC sketch comedy The League of Gentlemen. Born in Blackburn and raised around Chorley, he trained at Bretton Hall College of Education, where he met Mark Gatiss and Reece Shearsmith. With Gatiss, Shearsmith and Jeremy Dyson he wrote and performed in The League of Gentlemen, which began as a stage act in 1995, moved to BBC Radio 4 in 1997 and reached BBC Two in 1999, winning a British Academy Television Award, a Royal Television Society Award and a Golden Rose of Montreux. With Shearsmith he co-wrote and starred in Psychoville and the anthology series Inside No. 9, which ran ten years and earned him four awards. His other television credits include Blackpool, Shameless, Whitechapel, Doctor Who, Benidorm and Mapp & Lucia. On film he appeared in Lassie (2005), The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse (2005), Mr. Bean's Holiday (2007) and Better Man (2024).

Early training
Pemberton studied acting at Bretton Hall College of Education. While he was a student there, he became acquainted with Mark Gatiss and Reece Shearsmith.
A change of course
Pemberton helped found the 606 Theatre alongside Gordon Anderson, Tom Hadley and producer Shane Walter. His early work was mostly in fringe theater.
Languages
Pemberton provided the voice of Mattis in the English language DVD re-release of Free Jimmy, a cult Norwegian animated film from 2006. Mattis is a heavy-set biker in the Lappish Mafia.

Pemberton and Shearsmith were announced in May 2024 as writers and stars of Stage/Fright, a stage version of Inside No. 9. Simon Evans directed the show, which ran at Wyndham's Theatre in London's West End from 18 January 2025 for 85 performances.
