Plot summary
On Earth-828 in 1964, Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm are four astronauts who gained superhuman abilities from cosmic rays and became the superhero team the Fantastic Four. The world is marking their fourth anniversary as heroes when Reed and Sue reveal that they are expecting a child. Months later, the Silver Surfer arrives and warns that the planet is marked for destruction by Galactus, a cosmic being who devours worlds. Reed looks into the disappearance of other planets and confirms the warning, and the team prepares to head into space.

- Marvel Studios wanted Adam Driver and Emma Stone to play Reed Richards and Sue Storm, but both declined, partly because the studio would not pay the high salaries they asked; Kevin Feige wanted to contain the studio's spending on talent.
- Ralph Ineson wore a practical purple and blue Galactus armor weighing about 350 lb, built so that someone was embodying the part; a crew kept him cool between takes, and the suit was also meant to help the motion capture process.
- John Malkovich's role as the Red Ghost was cut from the finished film, a decision Matt Shakman called heartbreaking; Red Ghost had been planned for an early sequence in which the team battles him and his Super-Apes.
- AMC Theaters released a limited-edition Galactus popcorn bucket that holds 9 liters (2.37 gallons) of popcorn and earned a Guinness World Record as the largest popcorn container commercially available.
- Pedro Pascal wanted Reed Richards to speak with a Mid-Atlantic accent to suit the film's 1960s setting, but Marvel Studios asked him to use his own voice instead.
- The film's Yancy Street set was built to match the Jewish neighborhoods of Jack Kirby's childhood, complete with kosher grocery stores and a synagogue, and the filmmakers wanted it to feel like part of the normal world rather than the futuristic one.
- Julia Garner took surfing lessons despite a fear of the ocean so she could move like a surfer in the role, and combined surfing poses with statuesque poses from the comics so the Silver Surfer would move elegantly, like a dance.
- H.E.R.B.I.E. appears in live action for the first time in the film; a deactivated version of the robot had been set for a brief cameo in Fox's 2005 Fantastic Four, but that scene was cut.
