Plot summary
Dr. John Watson leaves the Army on medical discharge and settles in London. A fellow student from Bart's introduces him to Sherlock Holmes, whose methods of investigation catch his interest, and Watson accepts Holmes's offer of rooms in Baker Street. In 1895 Inspector Lestrade lays a case before them: Emelia Ricoletti, a consumptive bride, fired on passers-by from a balcony and then shot herself fatally, and that same evening she confronts Mr. Ricoletti and shoots him dead before slipping into the fog. Dr. Hooper reports that each body brought to the morgue has been identified as Emelia. Months afterward Mycroft Holmes refers the case of Sir Eustace Carmichael, who received an envelope of orange pips and calls his wife hysterical; Holmes and Watson keep watch at the house.
