Plot summary
In July 1969, as the world awaits the Apollo 11 moon landing, a boy named Jim meets 90-year-old Julius Bedford at a country fair in England. Bedford recounts that in 1909, working as a struggling writer, he encountered Professor Arthur Cavor at Apuldram. Cavor had invented Cavorite, a material that blocks gravity. Bedford urged Cavor to consider the profits the invention could bring. Together they constructed a cast iron sphere and traveled to the Moon. There they discovered that the Moon's oxygen atmosphere lay frozen in the surface and was released by sunlight. The Moon's inhabitants, called Selenites, captured them with nets and took them underground. After they revived, the two men were fed and tried to communicate with the creatures, without success.
