Plot summary
In the years before the First World War, Kirsty Macleod lives in Garenin, a village on the Hebridean island of Lewis, with her widowed mother, Mairi, and her sister, Annie. Kirsty and her boyfriend, Murdo MacAulay, plan to leave for America. The war interrupts them: Murdo and the other young men of the village are called up for service, and the community holds a dance in the road to honor the men before they go. That night an unidentified assailant attacks Kirsty. The village doctor, Maclean, examines her afterward and confirms that she was raped; who attacked her is not known.
