Plot summary
Danny Stetson is a college student and gymnast in the United States with hopes of an Olympic gold medal. Rebecca, a compellingly beautiful young woman he meets, draws him into Homeland, a youth-oriented religious commune. There the charismatic leader Neil Kirklander programs him to believe that life inside the group has a meaning his old life lacked. Diana and Kevin Stetson, anguished by their son's disappearance, turn to Charles Pratt, a modern-day bounty hunter, to abduct Danny and bring him home. Pratt means to take the young man from the commune and undo the programming, a step the family knows could be traumatizing.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Tatum O'Neal was originally cast in Split Image, but she had to be let go because at seventeen she was not able to work the night scenes the film required. Karen Allen replaced her, and since Allen was ten years older, the script needed a rewrite.
- Scott Spencer, whose novel Endless Love had been filmed by Polygram, wrote the first script for Split Image, but he was replaced by Larry Gross and then Robert Kaufmann. Spencer said he was never actually fired, the phone calls just stopped coming.
- Ted Kotcheff said he cast Peter Fonda in Split Image because he wanted the actor's 1960s resonances brought to his character.
