Plot summary
Aaron Kurlander, an eighth grader in Depression-era St. Louis, lives with his parents and his younger brother Sullivan at the Empire Hotel. His mother's tuberculosis sends her to a sanatorium, and Sullivan is sent to stay with an uncle, so Aaron remains with his father, a German immigrant who sells watches for the Hamilton Watch Company and takes long trips. At school he tells his teacher, Miss Mathey, that the family lives elsewhere, and he saves his classmate Billy Thompson from bullies by beating them at marbles. Billy shows him his canaries and offers him a female for his own bird, Skippy. Aaron caddies with his older friend Lester Silverstone and meets Ella McShane, a shy neighbor who invites him in to dance.
