Plot summary
Matt Fowler is a doctor practicing in a coastal Maine town, and his wife, Ruth, teaches music there. Their son Frank, a recent college graduate, is home for the summer and has fallen in love with Natalie Strout, a divorced older woman with children. Frank is due to start graduate school in architecture, but he is considering staying in town to keep fishing and stay near Natalie. Ruth is concerned about the relationship; Matt thinks it is only a fling. Natalie's ex-husband, Richard Strout, keeps trying to find a way back into the lives of Natalie and her children, and his methods turn violent, including an assault on Frank. Frank resists Ruth's insistence that he report the violence to the police, and neither she nor Matt calls them either.

- In the Bedroom was the first film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, and it earned more Oscar nominations than any Sundance premiere until Precious in 2009.
- In the Bedroom became, at the time, the highest-grossing non-IMAX film in history never to reach the top 10 in a given week, and had an expense-to-profit ratio of 1:25.
