Plot summary
In 1980 Catherine Claire works restoring art in Manhattan, where she lives with her husband George and their daughter Franny. George is hired to teach art history at a college, so the family relocates to a big farmhouse in upstate New York. Catherine, who has bulimia, feels cut off there. She finds an old Bible listing the Smits, the house's earlier owners, with some names scratched out and marked Damned. Odd lights draw her toward an antique ring, and she starts wearing it.
