Plot summary
Amanda Wingfield's husband abandoned the family long ago, and she speaks of her youth as a genteel Southern belle with devoted beaux, a memory that may be more romanticized than real. Her son Tom is an aspiring writer who earns his living in a warehouse to keep the household going, and he spends his spare hours watching movies at cinemas. Her daughter Laura is shy, has a disability, and gives much of her time to a collection of glass animal figurines. Amanda wants a proper gentleman caller for Laura, and her ideas about what life should be shape the household.
