Plot summary
George Dunlap writes for a living and shares a refurbished farmhouse in Marin County, California, with his wife Faith and their daughters Sherry, Jill, Marianne and Molly. On the night of a banquet in his honor, he telephones Sandy, a single mother he has been seeing, and Sherry, the oldest, listens in on the call. The next morning Faith voices her suspicions of the affair, and George moves out to his beach house. Sherry stops speaking to him, while her sisters visit on weekends and meet Sandy. Faith sinks into depression, then takes up with Frank Henderson, the contractor building a tennis court at the farmhouse. George returns to the farmhouse demanding to hand Sherry her birthday present, a typewriter.

- The filmmakers found the Roy Ranch House, an abandoned 114-year-old clapboard ranch house in San Francisco, dismantled it into four pieces and moved it to the Nicasio Valley in Marin County, then spent six weeks restoring it and building a driveway, gardens and a tennis court.
- Alan Parker's first choice for George Dunlap was Jack Nicholson, who declined because of the script's subject matter; Parker then approached the English stage and film actor Albert Finney, whom he had admired.
- Parker first discussed the part of Faith Dunlap with Diane Keaton while she was preparing Reds, and also talked to Meryl Streep, who declined because she was pregnant; Keaton agreed to star once the project moved to MGM.
- After Fame, Parker decided against an original score; Bo Goldman picked "Don't Blame Me" from MGM's music library and it runs through the film as a minimalist piano leitmotif, played on one finger "like a child would play."
- Shoot the Moon was Bo Goldman's first attempt at writing a screenplay, originally developed under the title Switching and begun in 1971, inspired by the collapsing marriages he saw around him and the children hurt by them.
