Ferdinand Waldo Demara moves through life under names that are not his own, taking work in one occupation after another and supplying the papers each one requires. The impersonations are not for profit; he wants to live other lives than the one he has. He leaves high school, enlists in the United States Army, and is refused officer training because he has no diploma. He forges the credentials he lacks and signs on with the United States Marine Corps.
