Plot summary
Jeremy Rodock runs a horse ranch in Wyoming and answers rustling with a rope, hanging thieves himself rather than handing them to the law. When rustlers shoot him and steal his horses, a young cowboy named Steve Miller finds him, removes the bullet and saves his life, and Rodock gives him work at the ranch. Steve meets Jocasta Constantine, called Jo, a former dance-hall girl who is Rodock's girlfriend and who is ashamed of her past. Rodock's wrangler McNulty tells Jo that the rancher has 'hanging fever.' Steve finds Rodock's ways hard to accept, and he is drawn to Jo.

- Tribute to a Bad Man started with Spencer Tracy as its star, but he clashed with director Robert Wise and caused several delays; when Tracy claimed the high altitude of the mountain set made him ill and demanded it be moved, MGM dismissed him and replaced him with James Cagney.
- Robert Francis was originally cast as the young cowboy Steve Miller, but he was killed in an airplane crash just before filming began, and Don Dubbins was given the part instead.
- Irene Papas took over the female lead after Grace Kelly turned the film down, and Eva Marie Saint and Jennifer Jones had also refused it.
