Lurene Tuttle
Biography
Lurene Tuttle was an American radio, film, and television performer and acting coach who got her start in vaudeville and earned the nickname First Lady of Radio for her wide range of roles. Born in Pleasant Lake, Indiana, on August 29, 1907, she acted at the Pasadena Playhouse and with the vaudeville troupe Murphy's Comedians. Her radio debut came in 1936 on Hollywood Hotel with Dick Powell, and she went on to comedies, dramas, thrillers, and soap operas. On screen she was usually cast as warm wives and mothers or bristling matrons, with parts in Macbeth (1948), Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948), Don't Bother to Knock (1952), Niagara (1953), Psycho (1960), and Testament (1983). Her rare starring role came in Ma Barker's Killer Brood (1960), she played Grandma Pusser in the Walking Tall trilogy, and television viewers knew her as Vinnie Day in Life with Father and Hannah Yarby in Julia.

Tuttle first appeared on radio in 1936, on Hollywood Hotel with Dick Powell. She had never performed before a microphone, yet her audition earned her a contract with the program lasting three years.
Getting ready for a role
Tuttle took on the roles of good and evil twins in The Whistler, a radio show, and kept each twin distinct by speaking into a different microphone.
Beyond film
Tuttle played the swallow in a 1946 radio adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The Happy Prince with Orson Welles and Bing Crosby, a story Welles had adapted for radio in 1944 with a score by Bernard Herrmann.
