Biography

Pat Buttram was an American character actor remembered for a distinctive voice and for his sidekick parts in Gene Autry movies. Born in Addison, Alabama, he acted in college plays, did local radio and joined National Barn Dance on WLS in Chicago before hosting his own CBS program. He moved to Hollywood in the 1940s; a brief turn as Roy Rogers's sidekick ended quickly, but Gene Autry hired him, and the pair made more than 40 movies and over 100 episodes of Autry's television show, beginning with The Strawberry Roan (1948). He played Mr. Haney on Green Acres from 1965 to 1971 and provided voices for Disney features including Napoleon in The Aristocats (1970), the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood (1973), Luke in The Rescuers (1977) and Chief in The Fox and the Hound (1981). He later appeared in Back to the Future Part III, and A Goofy Movie (1995) was released the year after his death.

  1. A role that slipped away

    In the 1940s Buttram went to Hollywood and became a sidekick to Roy Rogers, but Rogers already had two regulars, so Buttram was dropped.

  2. About the name

    Buttram joined Autry on the radio show Melody Ranch in the late 1940s and then on The Gene Autry Show. In the first television season he used Pat or Patrick with different last names, and from the second season he used his own name.
