  1. Big break

While filming Flight of the Phoenix in Namibia, Laurie recorded his audition tape in the hotel bathroom, the only spot with enough light. His American accent convinced executive producer Bryan Singer, who did not know Laurie was British.

  2. A role that slipped away

Laurie was cast as Perry White, the Daily Planet editor, in Singer's film Superman Returns, but his commitment to House forced him to bow out of the project.

  3. A role that slipped away

Hugh Laurie was in talks to play Blackbeard in the 2014 series Crossbones, but the part ended up going to John Malkovich instead.

  4. Big break

In 2015, Laurie took a recurring part on Veep as Tom James. Armando Iannucci, the showrunner, learned Laurie liked the show, so the role was created just for him.

  5. Behind the camera

Laurie's first novel, The Gun Seller, came out in 1996. This intricate thriller, which mixes in Wodehouseian humor, went on to become a best-seller.
