Plot summary
In 1900 the Otis family arrives from America at Canterville Chase, the English country house where Sir Simon de Canterville has been a ghost for three centuries. Hiram is an inventor; his wife Lucretia and their twin sons Kent and Louis come with him, along with their tomboy daughter Virginia, who is unhappy about the move. On the ghost's first visit, nobody in the household shows any fear, which offends him. Virginia then meets Henry, the Duke of Cheshire. As they talk, they pass a walled garden, and when she tries to climb the wall she falls and chokes until Henry catches her. A crow leads her to a broken bridge, where she sees a locket in the lake; the gardener startles her into the water, and Henry pulls her out.
