Plot summary
Roger Dearly designs video games in London and shares his home with a Dalmatian, Pongo. On a walk, Pongo takes a liking to Perdita, and a chase ends in St James's Park, where Roger meets her owner, Anita Campbell-Green. Anita designs clothes at the House of de Vil, the fashion house of Cruella de Vil, whose passion for fur runs as far as having her taxidermist, Mr. Skinner, skin a white tiger from the London Zoo for a rug. Drawing on her Dalmatian, Anita works up a design for a coat in spotted fur, and Cruella finds the notion of coats made from real Dalmatians appealing. Perdita and Anita are both expecting. When Perdita's fifteen puppies arrive, Cruella offers £7,500 for them, and the couple refuse. Cruella fires Anita and vows revenge on her and Roger.

- Over 300 Dalmatian puppies were used during filming, because they could only be filmed at 5 or 6 weeks old, and producer Edward S. Feldman guaranteed the adoption of every puppy used.
- Glenn Close initially turned down the role of Cruella de Vil, but costume designer Anthony Powell, who was then working with her on the Broadway show Sunset Boulevard, convinced her to take it.
- Animal rights organizations protested the film's release, saying Dalmatian sales shot up after the premiere as parents impulsively bought puppies for their children; many ill-prepared owners later surrendered the dogs to shelters, where many were euthanized.
