Plot summary
Peter and his five friends performed together in a Cambridge University comedy troupe. A decade ago they rang in 1983 at his family's country estate, where his father's middle-aged guests watched unimpressed, and only the housekeeper Vera and her young son Paul enjoyed the act. The troupe went their separate ways. Now Peter has inherited the estate and invites the group for the New Year's weekend of 1992 into 1993. Andrew is a writer in Hollywood, married to Carol, an American television star. Roger and Mary write jingles together. Sarah designs costumes, Maggie works in publishing, and Sarah brings along Brian. Vera and Paul are still at the estate, and Vera intends to leave right after the weekend.

- Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, Emma Thompson and Tony Slattery had lived a version of the film's premise: all four attended the University of Cambridge at the same time and were members of the Cambridge Footlights, a student comedy troupe similar to the one portrayed in the film.

The central character of Peter is said to have been partly inspired by Nicholas Eden, the son of former British Prime Minister Anthony Eden, who was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS after inheriting his father's titles.- The cast was entangled off screen as well: at the time the film was made Branagh was married to Thompson, who had also dated Laurie during their university days.
- Phyllida Law is Thompson's mother, and she, Richard Briers, Imelda Staunton and Alex Lowe all appeared with Branagh and Thompson again the following year in Branagh's adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing.
- Fry and Laurie were already a successful double act before filming, through the television series A Bit of Fry & Laurie and Jeeves and Wooster.
