Plot summary
Pete Lender sets traps around his house, certain that small objects keep vanishing. The ones taking them are the Clocks, a family of four-inch-tall Borrowers who live beneath the floorboards and collect the little things they need, unseen by the human beans above. Lawyer Ocious P. Potter tells Pete's parents, Joe and Victoria, that the will left by Victoria's late aunt Mary Alabaster is missing. That document is the family's only proof that the house is theirs, and Potter has plans to pull it down and put up condominiums. The Clocks must keep their home and themselves hidden as the Lenders prepare to move out.

- Some of the film's scenes were shot on location in the village of Theale, near Reading, Berkshire, where all of the buildings and shops in the High Street were painted dark green.
- When the film was released in the United Kingdom it opened at No. 2, behind Alien Resurrection, and the next week it retained the position, this time under Tomorrow Never Dies.
- In 1998 the film was nominated for Best British Film at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards, but lost to Gary Oldman's film Nil by Mouth.
