Plot summary
David Copperfield grows up writing down phrases he wants to keep, on scraps of paper. As a boy he visits Peggotty, his nanny, and her family in their upturned boat house at Yarmouth. When he returns home, he learns that his widowed mother, Clara, has married Edward Murdstone, the callous owner of a bottling factory. Murdstone beats him and Murdstone's sister Jane bullies him, and he is sent to London to work in that factory. There he lodges with the Micawbers, a cheerful family always pursued by creditors.
