Plot summary
David and Paige Walling and Terry and Cathy Ostroff are best friends who live across the street from each other in West Orange, New Jersey, and do everything together. Both marriages look settled: David keeps to his man cave while Paige rehearses her Christmas carolers, and Cathy pretends to listen while Terry talks about his gadgets. Of the three grown children, only Vanessa Walling still lives at home, a design school graduate working on her portfolio. Nina Ostroff, her childhood friend, spent five years traveling the world and now lives in San Francisco, and has just broken off her engagement to an artist named Ethan. She arrives home for Thanksgiving, to Vanessa's displeasure. Cathy would like her to marry the Wallings' son Toby, who works in Washington, but Nina pays more attention to his father, David.

- Richard Gere's agent Ed Limato called Julian Farino to say Gere was interested in the script, but Farino wanted only Hugh Laurie to play David, and Laurie was reported in talks for his first feature lead role.
- Elliot Page was considered for Vanessa but turned it down, so Alia Shawkat, whose name the casting director mentioned first, auditioned twice and was cast.
- Jay Reiss and Ian Helfer's spec script, inspired by a story they heard from friends, landed on 2008's Black List of best unproduced work, alongside The Beaver and Inglourious Basterds; it was written during the Writers Guild of America strike.
- Director Julian Farino, who knew Leighton Meester from directing her on Entourage, approached her in the dressing room while she was preparing for a Gossip Girl episode, and they had a "rushed audition".
- The ending was rewritten before shooting, and during production Hugh Laurie, Leighton Meester, Allison Janney, Oliver Platt and Adam Brody shared a house.
