Plot summary
It is 1989, and the civil war in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, has cut the island off. Mr. Watts, the one white man still there, reopens the local school and reads the children Charles Dickens's Great Expectations. Matilda, a teenage girl, is spellbound by the tale of Pip, an orphan in Victorian England, and by how it answers her own life as everything around her comes apart. The Redskins, the army hunting the local rebels, are drawing nearer. Matilda writes the name Pip in the sand, and the soldiers believe Pip is a rebel leader, a real man they demand be handed to them.
