Plot summary

Bill Shelby works as a photographer and writer and travels the world. His magazine assigns him a feature about Dorinda Hatch, whose book The Lady Says No tells women to beware of men and has sold in huge numbers. He arrives braced for a dour spinster and finds instead a young blonde. The two of them quarrel over her position that love is nothing but an automatic bodily function and not worth the bother. Her uncle Matthew turns up, and she and Bill are drawn into the lives of the local people. Her own arguments work their way into her dreams.
