Plot summary
Tom Sawyer lives with his guardian, Aunt Polly, in a small town on the Mississippi River, and he spends more time dodging school than sitting still. When she sets him to chores as punishment, he talks other children into doing the work for him. He and Huckleberry Finn sneak out to try an incantation meant to raise a dead cat, and after dark they go to the graveyard, where Muff Potter, Injun Joe and Doc Robinson are digging up a grave. A quarrel over payment turns violent, and the boys flee, promising to keep quiet about what they saw. Tom is taken with Becky Thatcher, a girl newly arrived in town.

- Johnny Whitaker, who played Tom Sawyer, was a Mormon and so was barred from using tobacco; when Tom and Huck carve a pipe and smoke it together, cabbage leaves were substituted for the tobacco at Whitaker's insistence.
