Plot summary
Paul Wagner leads a disorderly life. He drinks and parties with Christopher Belling, an American who is both his friend and his business partner. After a high-society evening, Paul's drunken behavior causes outrage. One night, after drinking, he brings a prostitute to a park, where unknown assailants attack him and he is left with a serious head injury; she is strangled. Paul cannot run the family champagne business himself, so Christopher's wife Christine and her assistant Jacqueline run it. Christine wants to sell the company, and Paul refuses to sign.
