Raymond Bailey
Biography
Raymond Bailey was an American actor who worked on Broadway, in films and on television, and who became best known as the greedy banker Milburn Drysdale on The Beverly Hillbillies, a role he played from 1962 to 1971. Born in San Francisco, he went to Hollywood as a teenager, found movie work hard to get, and tried New York theater before shipping out as a merchant seaman. He returned to Hollywood in 1938 and began landing small parts, among them Mr. West in the serial The Green Hornet. After wartime service in the Merchant Marine he won larger character roles, including a doctor in Vertigo (1958), a colonel in No Time for Sergeants (1958), and the San Quentin warden in I Want to Live! (1958). He also appeared in Picnic (1955), Tarantula (1955), Al Capone (1959) and Five Weeks in a Balloon (1962), and acted in four Broadway plays, notably The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial.
