Plot summary
Sidney Bruhl comes home from the opening of his latest play, another flop in a long run of them, and tells his wife Myra about a manuscript that has reached him. Clifford Anderson, once a student in one of Sidney's writing seminars, wants his former teacher's opinion on his first play, a thriller titled Deathtrap. Sidney finds its construction so sound that a gifted director could not hurt it, and he remarks that the surest road back to Broadway would be to do away with the author and stage the script as his own. He calls Clifford, invites him to the house to work on it, and asks him to bring every copy; Clifford replies that his photocopier is broken. Myra presses Sidney to take the young man on as a partner instead.

SPOILER
The kiss between Sidney Bruhl, played by Caine, and Clifford Anderson, played by Christopher Reeve, is not in the original play. Reeve said preview audiences in Denver booed it, and estimated that a Time magazine report of the kiss spoiled a key plot element and cost the film $10 million in ticket sales.
