Plot summary
Major is an old circus lion whose owner, the clown Dimitri, has no way of taking him to Europe, so the animal comes to live with Napoleon Wilson and his grandfather Seth. Major has bad teeth and drinks only milk, and is kept in the chicken cage. When Seth passes away, Napoleon asks Danny Williams, a young graduate student, for help burying him, and Danny mentions the cabin he keeps up in the mountains. A letter Seth had sent to the boy's uncle is returned undelivered. Rather than be sent to an orphanage, Napoleon sets out to find Danny, taking Major and a rooster along, with his eight-year-old friend Samantha joining the trip.
