Plot summary
Sterling North is a boy in Brailsford Junction, Wisconsin, in the summer of 1918. His father, Willard, takes him into the woods, where a lynx scatters a family of raccoons and leaves one young raccoon behind. Sterling carries it home and names it Rascal. Willard's work takes him away, and Sterling's sister Theo, who lives in Chicago, lines up interviews for a housekeeper before she goes back. Willard sits down with Mrs. Satterfield, Theo's choice, then sends her off, convinced his son can look after himself. Through the summer Rascal wrecks a store and digs up a neighbor's corn, and a constable tells Sterling the animal must be caged or the boy will answer for the damage.
