Plot summary
King Eric VIII rules a small European nation, though he would rather sit down to checkers with his servants than attend to affairs of state. Queen Martha, his wife, holds that royal duty comes before all else and dominates him. Their daughter, Princess Anne, has different plans: she loves Freddie Granton, the king's commoner secretary, and intends to run away with him once her mother sails for America. The Marquis of Birten arrives with news that he has settled a political marriage for Anne with Prince William of Grec, whom she has never met. Martha is delighted and dismisses her daughter's protests. Meanwhile, the premier, General Northrup, warns that a revolution is brewing and asks for the king's signature to execute political prisoners.
