Plot summary
During World War II, Alfred Pettibone, a British secret agent, is killed on his way to deliver a secret document to Washington. The British government asks Sherlock Holmes for help, and he works out that Pettibone had photographed the document onto microfilm. Someone tries to kill Holmes as well, and he goes to Washington, D.C., with Doctor Watson to retrieve the microfilm before an international spy ring can get hold of it. Holmes reasons that the spies do not have it yet, because people who encountered Pettibone along the way have been harassed. The spies leave Pettibone's body where Holmes will find it, hoping to send him off the trail.
