Plot summary
Toni Day wants a home and a family, while her husband Jerry, a small-time swindler, drifts from one place to the next and will not take on responsibility. The couple owe money for their stay at a Shanghai hotel, and Jerry looks for a way to raise cash. His plan is to give up custody of Pennie, the daughter of his late first wife, to his former brother-in-law, a child he has never met. Toni is appalled and travels to Paris on her own. Jerry goes to see the girl instead, and her company changes his mind; he keeps her, and father and daughter make their way to Paris to join Toni.

- While Now and Forever was being made, Dorothy Dell, Shirley Temple's co-star in Little Miss Marker and a close friend, died in an automobile accident. Temple was not told until she filmed the scene in which her character learns her father lied about stealing the jewelry, so the tears in it were real.

Now and Forever was first shot with a different ending: as Pennie and Mrs. Crane leave on the train, Jerry dies of his gunshot wound and Toni drives their car over an embankment, killing herself too. Paramount re-scripted and re-filmed the ending to match the film's lighter tone.- Shirley Temple's performance of "The World Owes Me a Living" in Now and Forever introduced the song, which went on to become a standard.
- During the shoot, Gary Cooper bought Shirley Temple several toys and made a number of sketches for her, and the young actress had a good rapport with the adult crew.
