Robert Warwick

Biography

Robert Warwick was an American actor whose career took in the stage, silent film, sound film, and television, with more than 200 film credits. Born in Sacramento, California, in 1878, he studied music in Paris and trained as an opera singer before choosing acting. He made his Broadway debut in 1903 in Glad of It, appearing with a young John Barrymore, and became a matinee idol in silent films from 1914. When sound arrived he was already middle aged, but his resonant voice and aristocratic manner brought steady character work. His filmography included The Little Colonel (1935), The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), Sullivan's Travels (1941), and The Palm Beach Story (1942), the last two for director Preston Sturges. He also made In a Lonely Place (1950) and I Married a Witch (1942), and later While the City Sleeps (1956). From the late 1940s he appeared often on television. He died in 1964.
